When I joined the Solutions not Sides Bridge Builders Programme, I didn’t fully know what to expect. As a regular state school student, opportunities like this often feel out of reach, but Solutions not Sides provided me with access to experiences and networks that I would never have imagined for myself. For that, I will always be grateful.
What stood out most was the feeling of being recognised, especially as a first generation kid. The programme opened doors that challenged me, inspired me, and allowed me to connect with people who not only shared their wisdom but also encouraged me to see the world differently.
Despite all the uglyness that goes on in the world, I was taught how valuable it is to consistently push for peace. The fact that peace starts with us, with a conversation, with young people just truly captivated me. I had the chance to network with incredible individuals (especially over delicious food in the evenings) who pushed me to grow and gave me opportunities that extend far beyond the programme itself.
In a way, despite it only being a week long, the programme feels like it has persisted due to its lessons and meaning. For Ali and Tasha, whose guidance and support made this possible, I couldn’t be more grateful.
The programme also reshaped the way I think about difference. I was able to engage with two perspectives that are seen as completely opposed, and yet I came to understand how we can work together despite disagreement, united in striving for the ultimate goal of peace and humanity. I learned how to ask questions respectfully, and get my opinion across carefully. Most importantly, I learned how to have a clear conversation. Even when the conversation is difficult. This demonstrated to me another key take away - dialogue. How powerful it truly is.
The people I met along the way were extraordinary - bright, thoughtful, and full of energy. They challenged not only my intellect but also my character, contributing to my character growth. The conversations we shared were as enriching as the friendships that grew out of them, and I know the connections I made will remain with me far beyond this experience.
I thank SNS for providing me with this experience.
