Statement on the Ceasefire Deal - 9th of October 2025

Solutions Not Sides

SNS welcomes the news of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas—a moment that brings the possibility of safety and relief for millions, lifesaving humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, the return of hostages to their families in Israel, and space for people to begin rebuilding shattered lives.

Palestinians and Israelis have waited far too long for this day. Tens of thousands have been killed; millions have lived in fear, hunger, and despair. We hope this marks a true turning point. Civil society, campaigners, and peacebuilders have worked tirelessly for this moment—but this is only the beginning. Real change will come when we centre the voices of those who go against the grain for peace and justice.

Our Israeli and Palestinian volunteer speakers embody this courage. Despite their own pain and uncertainty, they have stood before young people across the UK to share their stories, hopes, and unwavering belief in a just and peaceful future. We thank them today and every day for their commitment.

Two of our speakers from Palestine and Israel are here with us in the UK this week. Their hearts have been heavy as they awaited news of a ceasefire, yet they have continued to speak with honesty and compassion—a true act of hope.

At SNS, our educational work continues. Schools are already reaching out, seeking guidance on what this moment means for their students and communities. We invite anyone who wishes to engage in open dialogue or host a workshop to contact us.

Our values—nonviolence, rejection of hatred, and equality for all—stand firm. We invite everyone to commit to listening, empathy, and to centre the needs and voices of both Israelis and Palestinians. Here are some of our speakers’ thoughts on today’s announcement:

“This time, the feeling is different—more cautious than joyful. Perhaps it’s because our hearts are wary of being broken again if the deal doesn’t hold. Yet we remain hopeful that this will mark a real turning point, not a return to the status quo before October 2023.”

“Cautiously optimistic and adamant that this needs to signal the beginning of real structural change and not the status quo.”

“Personally I feel really sad and tired today. Not relief yet.”

“Immense excitement and joy for everyone who will soon be released and for their families. Along with the relief that lives will now be spared, I carry deep sorrow for all those lost in vain. This is a moment of hope—and also of responsibility. We still have much work ahead to turn this agreement into a real foundation for a shared future based on equality, security, and freedom for all Israelis and Palestinians”
